Can you epoxy a garage floor in winter here?
Not with epoxy, and not in an unheated garage. Standard 100% solids epoxy cures by a chemical reaction that slows as the concrete gets colder and effectively stops somewhere around 50 degrees at the slab. Below that the base coat stays soft for days, never reaches full hardness, and lets go under the first hot tire or the first stud that digs into it.
An unheated garage slab in Kootenai County sits in the high twenties to mid forties from November into March. That is not a close call. Any quote that puts an epoxy floor down in January in an unheated garage is a quote for a floor that will peel, and the crew either does not know it or is hoping you do not.

Slab temperature, not air temperature
This is the part most homeowners and a few crews get wrong. The coating cures against the concrete, so the number that matters is the temperature of the slab, and a slab is a thick block of stone sitting on frozen ground. It lags the air by days and it lags the ground by weeks. On a sunny March afternoon the garage can be 55 degrees at head height and the floor 38.
A space heater run for an afternoon does not fix this. It warms the air and the top eighth of an inch. Turn it off, close the door, and the concrete pulls the surface right back down to ground temperature overnight, in the middle of the cure. Heating a slab takes days of continuous heat with the door shut, which in an attached garage is possible and in a detached one is expensive. Either way, the crew should be reading the slab with a thermometer, not guessing from the weather.
Why condensation is the other winter problem
A cold slab in a garage that gets opened and closed all day sweats. Warm, damp air from a running truck or a door left up on a chinook afternoon hits concrete at 35 degrees and condenses on it, the same way a cold glass sweats in July. That film of water is invisible on gray concrete and it ruins a coating’s bond.
The rule crews use is that the slab needs to be at least five degrees above the dew point in the garage before any coat goes down. In the cold months here that condition comes and goes by the hour, which is another reason the cold-season install is a one-day, fast-cure system rather than a two-day epoxy job that has to survive a night.
What does a polyaspartic system change?
Polyaspartic is a different chemistry. It cures in hours instead of days, and with the right product it keeps curing at slab temperatures down into the twenties. That makes it the floor that can actually be installed in a Coeur d’Alene garage from November to March: grind and repair in the morning, coats through the afternoon, walk on it that evening, park the next day.
It is also the top coat on a warm-season epoxy floor, because it is stable in sunlight and harder against studs than epoxy is. The trade is money for a floor that does not have to wait for April.
Does a heated shop change the calendar?
Completely. The calendar below is for an unheated garage. A shop with a furnace or radiant floor heat that holds the slab in the fifties year-round can take an epoxy system in any month, and a lot of the detached shops around Hayden and Rathdrum are set up that way. The test is the same: a thermometer on the concrete, not on the wall.
The one thing heat does not change is moisture. A heated slab over wet ground still needs the meter reading and, if the number says so, a mitigation primer. Heat dries the surface; it does not dry the ground.
The month-by-month calendar for an unheated Kootenai County garage
November through March. The slab lives in the thirties and low forties. Polyaspartic or wait. This is also stud season, so a floor that goes in now goes straight into the hardest wear of the year; that is fine for a full system and fatal for anything thin.
April and May. The ground thaws and the slab climbs through the forties into the fifties, usually by the back half of April in a south-facing garage and a couple of weeks later in a shaded one. Epoxy comes back onto the table once the meter reads 50 at the concrete, morning included. This is also when the winter’s de-icer film and snowmelt have to be washed and ground out before anything bonds.
June through September. Prime season. The slab is in the sixties and seventies, cure times are short, and the door can stand open without a dew-point problem. October. The last epoxy window, and it closes from the top of the month down. The slab is still warm from summer but the ground is cooling fast, and studded tires go legal on the first. A floor that goes in early October has two or three weeks to reach full hardness before the studs arrive. A floor that goes in the last week of October is a polyaspartic floor, whatever the calendar says.
How to check your own slab temperature
An infrared thermometer costs about the price of a bag of ice melt at any hardware store. Point it at the concrete, not the wall, at seven in the morning, which is the coldest the slab gets in a day. Take a reading in the middle of the floor and one by the door, and one where the slab meets the foundation wall if you can get at it.
If the morning reading is above 50 and stays there for a few days, epoxy is on the table. If it is in the forties, you are looking at polyaspartic or a wait. If it is in the thirties, nothing epoxy should be anywhere near that floor, and a crew that quotes it anyway has told you what you need to know.
Moisture after the snow goes
